My First Job Interview

What to expect
Most of it is predictable: tell me about yourself, why here, a strength, a difficulty, and a question or two of your own. Nerves peak in the waiting room and fall once you're talking. Silence while you think reads as considered, not blank.
How to prepare
- Prepare three stories in situation-action-result form that you can bend to most questions.
- Research the organisation enough for one specific, non-obvious question.
- Do one out-loud rehearsal — silently rehearsing doesn't transfer.
- Check route, format, dress code, and any tech the day before.

What helps
- Arriving early enough to stop rushing, but entering about ten minutes before.
- Taking two seconds before answering instead of filling the gap.
- A short, concrete example over a general claim, every time.
- A brief thank-you note afterwards; it's rare and remembered.
Do and don't
- Do ask when and how you'll hear back.
- Don't criticise previous employers or teachers.
- Don't inflate skills you'd have to use in week one.
When to get help
- Requests for money, bank details, or documents before any offer.
- No written contract, unclear pay, or 'unpaid trial shifts'.
- Inappropriate questions about age, health, religion, or family plans.

Write down the questions you were asked while they're fresh — the next interview is 80% the same. Rejection at this stage is about fit far more often than about capability.
