My First Day at a New Job

Any age, every few yearsPersonal milestoneYou, A manager, The colleague who actually explains things

General information drawn from common experience and public guidance — not medical, legal, or financial advice. For anything urgent or personal to your situation, speak with a qualified professional.

What to expect

Admin, introductions, and an information volume you cannot retain. You'll feel useless for a week and slow for a month — normal in nearly every role. Competence typically returns around weeks four to twelve, and imposter feelings in a new job are close to universal.

How to prepare

  • Confirm start time, place, dress code, and what to bring.
  • Keep one running document of names, systems, acronyms, and passwords-to-request.
  • Prepare a two-sentence answer to 'so what did you do before?'
  • Sort the boring admin early: payroll, tax code, pension, emergency contact.

What people say

I understood nothing for two weeks and assumed I'd been hired by mistake. Everyone says the same.

Reported experience, first day

Asking the same question twice was fine. Guessing for three weeks was not.

What helps

  • Asking 'what does good look like in 90 days?' in your first manager conversation.
  • Writing down every process the first time you're shown it.
  • Finding one peer who answers the small questions.
  • Delivering something small and visible in the first fortnight.

Do and don't

  • Do ask questions early; the window where it's expected closes.
  • Don't propose big changes before understanding why things are as they are.
  • Don't skip breaks or lunch to look committed.

When to get help

  • No contract, no clarity on pay or hours after starting.
  • Being asked to do something unsafe or unlawful.
  • Bullying, or a probation review with no stated criteria.

Afterwards

Book a 30-day check-in with your manager yourself. Note what confused you — you'll be the person who onboards someone else within a year.

Why it matters

The habits you set in the first weeks — how you ask questions, how you write things down — tend to define the job.
